The magic of social media never ceases to amaze me, especially when it connects us with the military community around the world. Almost a decade ago, I met Sarah Dressler on Instagram and discovered we were both military spouses! Sarah's incredible talent and creativity led her to launch not one, but two creative ventures – first as a designer and maker of stunning clothing, and now as an author. Sarah's dedication to her craft is inspiring, and she's been an advocate and educator for her Air Force family since her kids were little.
An Air Force spouse, mama of two, and a brilliant author Sarah recently published her latest book, Spring Showers. We were over the moon to celebrate this milestone with a beautiful collaboration on the Renewal in Bloom Bracelet.
It's an honor to shine a light on Sarah's story, her Air Force family, and her life as an author. Say hello to my friend, Sarah Dressler!
GIVE US A BEHIND-THE-SCENES PEEK AT YOU AND YOUR FAMILY – HOW DID YOU BECOME A MILITARY SPOUSE (MILSPOUSE)? WHAT DO YOU DO IN ADDITION TO BEING A MILSPOUSE? AND A FUN FACT ABOUT YOUR MILITARY FAMILY?
If there's one hallmark of a military family, it's the way we remember important events in conjunction with our duty station at the time. After 27 moves, this is still how I categorize significant times of my life. Like, when I met my husband, who was my brother's roommate at the Air Force Academy, in Colorado Springs, or when I became pregnant while stationed in Delaware, or the time we went on our first cruise while stationed in Texas. These special days and the way in which they are remembered is one of the blessings of being a military spouse.
In addition to supporting my husband, I have homeschooled my kids for the past eleven years (yes, that means we're almost done). I never set out to be a home educator, but the process has been one of my greatest pleasures of life and something I believe God called me to do before I even knew it.
I grew up the daughter of an Air Force officer and had seen what the lifestyle can do to the children in a military family. I knew what worked well and what didn't. Not wanting to repeat some of the hardships of my own childhood gave me the perspective and courage to try something different with my kids.
Being a military spouse inspires me in many aspects of my life, not least of all when I transitioned out of being a fashion designer and blogger to being an author full-time. My breadth of experiences traveling the globe helps me to bring my stories and characters to life in a unique way.
After nearly twenty years as a spouse and nearly eighteen as a dependent, I'm grateful for all I have.
WHICH MILITARY BRANCH DOES YOUR SPOUSE SERVE IN AND FOR HOW MANY YEARS HAS HE SERVED?
Air Force
In nearly twenty years of service, we have spent the majority of our time in Texas and in Colorado, though we've moved eleven times in nineteen years. My favorite place we've lived is in Colorado Springs. I don't think I'll ever get tired of seeing the mountains and stunning sunsets every day.
Everyone always says that they learn how to be flexible as a military spouse, to go with the flow. But I'm not a go with the flow kind of person. I'm a planner. So, I've learned how to be more effective with the plans I can make, and okay with knowing I might have to throw it out the window.
I wear the Renewal in Bloom bracelet every day, and not because it was designed in collaboration to celebrate the release of my second novel, Spring Showers, but because the theme of the story is about the beauty that comes from a storm.
As a military spouse, I have weathered many tumultuous times, and my experience paints a picture of joy and happiness despite the turmoil.
